FAQs

Why “Johnny In A Dress?”

Yes, That’s right. Johnny In A Dress. I decided to name my Blog Johnny In A Dress because that’s who I am! My father’s name was Johnny and I am pretty much a clone of him. (He did not wear a dress though!) He passed away when I was eight and people tell me that I am “Johnny in a dress!” So there you go, that’s the story behind the name!

How did you learn to sew?

I am still learning! I literally hi-jacked my mother’s sewing machine about 6 months ago (March 2010) and taught myself! I grew up watching my mother sew and always liked to “help” her, but was never interested enough to sit down and actually learn how to sew (man, I am wishing I did!). So when I run into a problem, I call her and she comes right on over to help me! My Aunt is also super talented and she has taught me a lot about sewing too! There have been many occasions when I call her with a crazy problem of mine, she always comes to the rescue.  I am so blessed to be in a family filled with talented women! So if you see something I have done and there is a better/ easier way to do it, please leave a comment or send me an email and let me know! I welcome your advice and tips!

How do you “do it all?”

I DON’T!

Somedays my house is a total wreck. Somedays I feel like I am so busy with life, I’ll never be able to squeeze in a craft again. Somedays the piles (yes that’s right, PILES) of laundry have grown so out of control because of my neglect, I feel that I will never see the floor underneath them again. Sometimes I decide to “forget” to cook dinner so I can have more time for a craft or sewing project… and the hubs will get take-out. (It’s a great trick! Try it!) I often remind myself that my marriage and children come before the sewing machine or a new, awesome craft that is screaming my name. So no, I don’t “do it all” in fact, I often compare my life to somewhat of a tornado!

But hey, that’s what makes life interesting!

How do you find such great pieces of furniture on the side of the road?

You must drive around all day!

Actually, the key to finding great items on the side of the road (or curbside trash) is not looking for it! I never go out of my way to look for it and really don’t even think about it until I happen to see a huge pile of stuff sitting on the curb begging me to stop and rummage through it. So just run your normal errands and go about your days as you normally would.
