{baby Hollis} The Nursery

I am sooooo super excited to FINALLY reveal Hollis’s nursery!

I am super bummed because as most of you know, our house was broken into and my laptop was stolen… with all of the step by step pictures and tutorials for the nursery.
Booo-hoo-hoo…
..that seriously stinks because I was soooo excited to share every.single.teeny.tiny.detail with you and literally walk you through every step of decorating this nursery.

Anywho,
we must move on…
…so I will try my best to share as many tips and tutorials as I can!

Now for the BIG REVEAL!!!

One of my favorite things in the nursery is this light fixture.
I found it a Goodwill for $5!
It was brass (not a “good” brass) and seriously AWFUL!
With the help of Krylon’s Watermelon spray paint, this light fixture went from drab to FAB!
One thing I loved about this light fixture right away was the sweet flower detail on the frosted globes!

I painted the ceiling medallion with a “dry” paint brush to give it a weathered look.
I used the same paint as I did on the walls (Valspar Aqua Glow) and love the way it turned out!

I decided to hang the chevron pennant banner I made for Harper’s Bow Tie & TuTu Birthday Party above the closet in the nursery!

This sweet pink dresser was a side of the road find from about 6 years ago.

With a little Valspar Sweet Pink paint, some Krylon Ivy Leaf Spray Paint on the handles and some glass knobs, this dresser turned into the perfect dresser for a sweet little baby girl’s nursery!

I am really loving the way the dresser pops against the aqua walls!

{tutorial on the HOLLIS letters coming soon}

I decided to use everyday baby items as décor in her nursery as well!
These burps add a fun pop of color on top of the dresser and are easily accessible at the same time!

Above Hollis’s crib are her giant monogram!
You can purchase it here at an awesome price!
I spray painted this one using Krylon Watermelon.
I also made the crib shirt using this tutorial!

When I walk into the nursery,
I instantly become happy!
I love the pops of pink, green and aqua!

Above the daybed hangs two old windows that display our favorite ultrasound pictures of Hollis!
Ross removed (more like beat) the glass with a hammer then added chicken wire to the back of the window panes securing it in place with a staple gun.
I used little tiny clothes pins to display the ultrasound pictures!

The “changing table” is an old super heavy oversized chest that I painted and distressed years ago!
Love it!

I used a shutter that I found on the side of the road to hold Hollis’s bows!
I was surprised to find that it works GREAT!
(and just incase you are wondering… this is not even half of the bows Hollis has waiting to be worn!)

Of course, this is a nursery,
so I wanted to make sure to keep it fun!
I saved these fun little sock animals that were in Cliff’s nursery and decided they were perfect to hang out in Hollis’s nursery!

I made this super fun, scrappy lamp using this tutorial.

The mobile that hangs in the nursery had a seriously fabulous tutorial ready to go!…
…on the laptop that was stolen…
Don’t worry, I am trying to recreate the tutorial for you!

There is a local artist here called “The Chicken Man” and I knew that I wanted to use his awesome work in Hollis’s nursery!
(This one was in my room when I was in highschool!)

I love this happy little corner of the nursery!
See the other Chicken Man painting?!
The pink bamboo table used to be green and would you believe me if I told you it is actually a planter with a stacked basket on top?!

This pom pom banner was super simple to make and added the perfect element of fun to the crib!

{Pom Pom Banner tutorial coming soon}

Apparently crib bumpers are a BIG no no now…
(It’s amazing Cliff and Harper survived with their fabulously thick bumpers in their cribs…Ha!… seriously these “baby safety” rules change so fast that I am out of the loop even though I had a baby 2 years ago…)
So, I decided to forgo a bumper and applique Hollis’s monogram in the center of her crib sheet!

I love the way it turned out!

The cornice board was created using this tutorial.
I decided to keep this one straight since the window is so large and I added pom poms to the bottom edge too!
Would you believe me if I told you it is made out of foam board?!

I can’t wait to show Hollis her nursery!
(…she better stay put for about  three more weeks though!)

DIY Picture Frame {Tutorial} & Using Lacquer Spray Paint

Remember these fun frames that display the little’s photos in our master bedroom?!

DIY Picture Frame, Open Back Picture Frame, Lacquer Spray Paint, Picture Frame Tutorial

They used to look ummmm not so cute…

I busted out removed the mirrors from the frames.

Then I whipped out a can of Rustoleum Black Lacquer spray paint.
I wanted the frames to look super shiny and elegant so the “lacquer” look was perfect for this project!

DIY Picture Frame, Open Back Picture Frame, Lacquer Spray Paint, Picture Frame Tutorial

When using this spray paint, you want to take extra time to make sure that the surface you are painting is SUPER clean and free of dust, dirt, etc. This paint is SUPER glossy and a tiny spec of dust or sand will show up. After a thorough cleaning, make sure that your surface is COMPLETELY dry. Following the directions on the back of the can, paint your frames (or whatever you are painting). Use thin coats allowing the paint to dry completely before applying the next coat. Eventually, your surface will be super shiny and fabulous! TAKE YOUR TIME WITH THIS PART!

DIY Picture Frame, Open Back Picture Frame, Lacquer Spray Paint, Picture Frame Tutorial

Once your frames are totally dry (I let mine dry overnight just to be super safe), get some twine, scissors and a staple gun.
(Note: you can use any type of wire, very thick string, etc)

DIY Picture Frame, Open Back Picture Frame, Lacquer Spray Paint, Picture Frame Tutorial

Turn your frame over and staple the twine to the back of the frame leaving an inch or so sticking out on each end.

Then take the extra twine on both ends and staple it like this, pulling in the opposite direction:

See how they look from the front?!

I used tiny clothes pins to hang the photos!

Now you have super fun open back frames to display your favorite photos!
The best part is how simple it is to switch the photos out!

DIY Master Bedroom Makeover!

I decided to redecorate our master bedroom on a Friday morning.
Three days later our bedroom looked like this:
(You can see what it used to look like here)

When decorating our “new” room,
I wanted to keep it simple and uncluttered.
I carefully chose a few of my favorite pieces décor that we already had in our house and with a little rearranging, everything has a new purpose.

I ran across this lamp shade at Target and HAD to have them for our bedroom!
Then I noticed that these glass bases were PERFECT for these shades!
Gotta LOVE the mix and match options at Target!
(This is what spurred the three day redecorating frenzy!)

I whipped up these pillows during naptime.
I fell in love with the Premier Print Twill Collection and instantly chose to mix yellow with black and white.

Coffee Table {Redo}

Every time I walk through our den past the coffee table,

I smile!

Our coffee table wasn’t always this fun…

I scored this at an estate sale for $20:

After a little sanding, a few coats of Kilz, a few coats of Krylon Jade and two coats of wipe on poly, we ended up with this fabulous coffee table!

Aren’t the legs on it awesome?!

It never ceases to amaze me what a little paint can do!

Yay for an awesome furniture transformation under $40!

Spring Wreath {Tutorial}

Earlier this week, I showed you my new Spring Wreath!

Here is how it is made:

For this wreath,

I used a very thin flannel.

I am sure you can use burlap or pretty much any medium weight fabric!

DSC_0415

You will need:

Light weight flannel (or any med – heavy weight fabric you want!)

A large wire wreath (Found at Hobby Lobby)

Scissors

Floral Wire

DSC_0704

Cut your fabric into strips.

Mine were about 7 inches wide and about 28 inches long.

(I used 2 strips for this wreath)

DSC_0701

Fan fold the end of one strip of fabric and “thread” the floral wire through all of the folds.

DSC_0707

Tie the end to the wire wreath using the floral wire like this:

DSC_0709

Begin loosely weaving the fabric in and out of the wire wreath…

DSC_0714

Fold the fabric back over then weaving it through again, making sure the front side of the wreath is covered.

DSC_0716

…Keep weaving in and out…

DSC_0721

Don’t freak out once you reach the end of the strip!

DSC_0725

Simply grab the second strip of fabric, fan fold, thread the floral wire and attach to the wire wreath just like you did with the first strip!

DSC_0728

Continue weaving the fabric in and out until the entire wire wreath is covered and then fluff away to your hearts desire!

DSC_0736

Flip the wreath over and tie twine or ribbon to the back of the wire wreath.

DSC_0740

Now gather your little wooden rectangles (found at Hobby Lobby for 50 cents), Chalkboard Spray Paint and little clothes pins.

Paint the wooden rectangles with the chalk paint…

Write cute letters on them and clip them to the twine in the center of your wreath with your little clothes pins!

DSC_0749

Now you have a simple spring wreath that can easily be used for many seasons!

Yay for Spring!

Knife Block – Your questions answered!

Lately my inbox has been flooded with questions about my Knife Block.
Today,
I will answer your questions!
I spray painted the wooden knife block a few good coats of Krylon Catalina Mist.
Once the first color was dry, I spray painted ONE thin coat of Krylon’s Ivy Leaf.
(The coats of spray paint should be thin and no paint should go down into the holes for the knives)
I let the paint dry COMPLETELY.
Then I sanded the knife block by hand allowing the Catalina Mist to come through until I got the look I wanted.
I cut out the “P” using my Silhouette and transferred it onto the front of my knife block.
If you do not have a Silhouette, you can find similar stickers at your local craft store.
(most likely in the scrapbooking isle)
And that’s how it was done!
Easy Peasy!
(you can see the original post here)

Framed Drying Rack How-To!

A few weeks ago, the theme of American Crafter was “House of Organization.”
Thanks to all of your fabulous support, I won Round 2!
Yay!
I decided to organize our laundry room and one thing we desperately needed was a drying rack.
I had a vision and the hubs brought it to life!
This is how we made our very own drying rack!

I had this not so cute long rectangular frame…

I took the picture out of the frame and gave the frame a good coat of white!
(Wait! Do NOT do this… You can paint the whole thing later.. The frame got beat up during the transformation and I had to repaint it!)

Ross then cut a piece of peg board so that it would fit perfectly inside the frame.
Then he measured the inside of the frame and cut pieces of 1in x 1in wood and created a “frame” inside of the frame. Do NOT nail it together yet, leave the pieces apart until later…

I wanted 5 rods to hang clothes on, so the hubs measured the long pieces of the 1 x 1 wood, did some math, then drilled 5 holes through both pieces of wood for the dow rods to go through.
He stacked the long pieces of wood on top of each other and clamped them together before he drilled the holes. That way the holes would line up perfectly.

He placed the inside “frame” back inside the frame (are you super confused or what?!) and we measured to determine how long each dow rod needed to be.

Then he started cutting the dow rods!

The hubs then hammered the rods into place.
Once the rods were sandwiched between the two long sides, he nailed the short ends on.
Then we had something like a little ladder!

We attached the bottom of the rack to the peg board with little hinges.
After a few coats of spray paint, we drilled a hole in the top center of the actual frame and added a  decorative knob. Then we screwed a little hook onto the top, center of the rack making sure that it will “hook” behind the knob to hold the rack up when it is not in use.
I tied two pieces of twine to the top corners of the rack and ran the twine through the holes of the peg board then secured it to the back of the frame.
That way the rack will only open as wide as you want it to!

Now we have the perfect place to air dry our delicate clothes!
Happy Laundry!

Pretty Up Your Pumpkins {JIAD style}

A few days ago I showed you my pumpkins!
Today I am going to show you how to make your own!
Yay!

The pumpkins used to look like this:
(They were purchased at Wally World and the Dollar Tree)
Some of them had “natural” looking stems –  which I like.
Some of them had cheap green plastic stems – which I do not like…
I started out by gently removing all of the stems
(except for the green ones… I had other plans for those pumpkins…)

I gathered all of the little pumpkins with the dreaded green stems and the two larger pumpkins (stems removed) and my favorite Krylon Rut Tough Enamel spray paint and went outside!

After a few coats they pumpkins were lookin’ like something I would have in my house!
Yay!

While the silver pumpkins were drying, I went inside and cut up little fabric scraps into smaller pieces:

Then I got my hot glue gun, placed a dab of glue then stuck a little piece of fabric onto the pumpkin…
Then repeated that like 5,000 more times until the entire pumpkin was covered!
(make sure not to cover the hole for the stem to go back in!)
I got some more ribbon scraps and cut them into strips then created ruffles with my sewing machine.
You can see how here.

I put a strip of hot glue on the pumpkin and then added the ruffle.
…. hot glue… ruffle….
If my ruffle was too long, then I cut it and when I got the the top, I folded the end of the ruffle under and glued it down (confused?! see next picture!)!
Make sure NOT to cover the hole for the stem to go back in!
Once all of your pumpkins are all scrappy and rufflie, put your stems back on (you may want to hot glue them back into place)!
Make sure to use different fabrics to create a fun bunch of pumpkins and gourds!
Gotta love a mixture of scrappy, shiny and ruffled pumpkins!

Visit thecsiproject.com

These fun pumpkins are taking over our house!

They weren’t always this “rufflie” and fun!

They were so simple to make!

And a few gourds are even scrappy!

Aren’t they super fun?!
Wanna make some of your own?!
A tutorial is coming soon!
Happy Saturday!
