Print On Heat n Bond {Applique Tutorial}

I made these shirts for Cliff and Harper to wear to the hospital when Hollis was born!

Applique Tutorial, How to print on Heat n Bond, How to Applique perfect letters

I took a roll of Heat n Bond and cut a piece the size of printer paper.
Then I went to the computer and picked out the words/fonts, etc I wanted to use.
Make sure you print the letters out BACKWARDS on the Heat n Bond!
Then I put the piece of Heat N Bond paper side UP in the printer with a few pieces of printer paper behind it and printed the letters onto the Heat n Bond!

Next, I gathered scrap fabric, cut out the letters and ironed the Heat n Bond to the back of the fabric according the directions on the package.
Cut out the letters, iron to the shirt and then stitch the letters onto the shirt.

Appliqued Onesies Tutorial {All Things Baby Guest Post}

All-things-baby_thumb

Hi all, I’m Emily from Home Made Lovely and am really excited to be here today sharing one of my favorite baby projects, appliqued onesies, while Natalie is soaking up time with baby Hollis and family.

I’m far from the first person to think of appliqueing a onesie, but I just love the effect and the endless possibilities to be creative with the design and fabric. Plus it is just so easy which is exactly the kind of project I was looking for after my daughter was born.

Here’s what you’ll need:
A onesie or t-shirt
Fusible Interfacing such as Heat ‘n Bond
Fabric
A simple design

To start trace or draw your design onto a piece of paper and cut it out. I made a simple robot and rocket ship. Then cut a piece of fusible interfacing big enough for your design and iron it on to the wrong side of your fabric.

Trace your design onto the interfacing. Remember that this is the wrong side of the fabric so your image will be mirrored when you see the right side.

Cut out your designs and peel the back off of the interfacing (this is seriously the hardest part of the whole thing for me… apparently I have some fat fingers!)  Position your pieces onto the onesie or shirt. Once you iron them down you won’t be able to move them so make sure they are right where you want them. I layered fabrics on both the rocket ship and robot designs, but ironed them down all at the same time to make sure they were positioned correctly.

Now simple run a hot-dry iron over your design and it will fuse to the onesie or shirt.

Finally sew around the edge of your design. You could use any stitch, but I chose just a straight stitch. I also added some buttons for the robot’s eyes. Make sure not to sew through both layers of the onesie or shirt.

And there you have your final product, a super cute and custom shirt for a little one. These two onesies are going to my nephew who is due to arrive in September.

I hope you enjoyed my favorite baby project and thanks to Natalie for inviting me to share it with you.

Cutest {BURP} On The Block! {tutorial}

I shared this tutorial last week over at This Crazy Blessed Life!
I am reposting it here just in case you missed it!

Today,
I am going to share with you how I made Hollis’s burps!

burp cloth tutorial, cute burp cloth, how to make a burp cloth

To make a super cutie burp you will need:
Thread
Cloth Diaper (Gerber makes packs of 10 that can be found at Target or Walmart)
Sewing machine
Scissors
Iron
Ribbon, Ric Rac, Pom Poms, etc.
(any trim you would like to use to pretty up your burp)
Wash and dry your cloth diapers.
They will all shrink differently, so this is VERY important!

Measure your cloth diaper, cut your fabric adding 3 inches to the length and 6 inches wide.
(I usually end up cutting my fabric about 21 inches long by 6 inches)
Iron the long sides of your fabric down about 1/4 of an inch.

Then iron the ends of the fabric 1/4 of an inch.

If you want to applique or monogram your burp, now is the time!
I like to iron the edges THEN add the applique or have the fabric monogrammed because you can see the edges of the fabric and be able to place the name/initials accordingly.
FIY: make sure that your monogram is about 2-3 inches away from the short edge!

Now place your fabric face down and then lay the cloth diaper on top.
Fold the ends over the burp cloth and iron into place.

It should look like this:
At this point, it would be super smart to pin the fabric into place…
I was lazy and totally winged it…

Top stitch one of the short ends.
(Don’t forget to  backstitch!)

Then stitch both long sides into place.

At this point, I like to flip the burp over and top stitch the remaining short end.

Now you have a super cute burp!

If you want to make your super cute burp FABULOUS,
add pom poms, ric rac, ribbon, ruffles or a cute fabric flower!
I add these AFTER the basic burp is complete!

If it’s gonna wipe up spit… it may as well be cute, right?!
Here are a few I made for my baby, Hollis, who will arrive in early August:

Seriously,
these are so simple to make and are the perfect gift for a new baby!

Turkey Shirt {Tutorial}

Remember those super cutie Turkey Shirts I made the littles to wear?!
Today, I am going to show you how to make your own!
Start out by printing the template below.
Turkey Applique Pattern

Choose the fabrics you want to use for your turkey and apply heat n bond to the fabric following the directions on the package. Next, cut out the template pieces and trace each piece onto the back of the fabric (the paper from the heat n bond is still attached!)!
Note: For the Ribbon Turkey I used shapes A and B then added ribbon to fill in the empty spaces.
For the Regular Turkey I used shapes A, B and C.

For the Ribbon Turkey:
Cut 4 strips of ribbon about 6 inches long.

Fold in half like this making sure the top sides of the ribbon are layered on top of each other pointing up!

And stitch…

Next you should have a nice pile of ribbons, like this:

Gather all of the pieces that you cut out an arrange them to make sure you like your turkey!

Get the shirt and iron on the pieces A and B following the directions on the package:

Then stitch around.

Pin the ribbon pieces on to fill in the gaps, like this:

And stitch them down!

Once everything is stitched in place, lay the body of the turkey on top of the feathers and iron on following the directions on the package.

Stitch around the body of the Turkey.

For the Regular Turkey:
Lay pieces A, B, and C out.
(A is the center, then B is on either side, then C is at the bottom)
Iron on following the directions on the package…

Then stitch around all of the edges and then lay the body on top .
Add the body and stitch around it too!

Then iron on the eyes and beak…
stitch them down and….

You have the perfect outfit for your littles to wear on Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ruffled Pumpkin Applique {tutorial}

I made Harper a super cutie Ruffled Pumpkin Applique shirt!
And today, I am showing you how to make your own!
Yay!

I started with a piece of fabric that was about 5 inches wide and 18 inches long.
(It was a scrap piece so it does not have to be exact!)
Sitch two rows down the center of the fabric to create your ruffle.
Make sure to set you machine on the LONGEST stitch setting and DO NOT backstitch!

Pull one of the threads on each row to ruffle your fabric.
The ruffle should be about 6 inches long x 5 inches wide.

Iron the ruffle flat!
Trust me, just do it!

Apply your ironed ruffle to Heat n Bond or Wonder Under following the directions on the roll.
You only need a square that is about 6 x 6 (just to be safe!)!

Gently pull the threads out that you used to create the ruffle.
Their job is done and it’s time to say goodbye!

Next Print out this template and use it to cut the pumpkin shape. You can trace around the pumpkin shape using a pen on the back of the ruffled fabric (the paper side). Get a scrap piece of fabric for the stem and apply Heat n Bond to it too. Use the template to cut out the stem!

Ruffle Pumpkin Applique Pattern

Now you should have this:

Place the stem and pumpkin onto the shirt where you want it.
Pull off the paper and iron into place following the directions on the package.

To create the ruffled neckline, cut a strip of fabric that is about 3/4 of an inch wide and 12 inches long. (again I used scraps… just make sure it is long enough to go from shoulder to shoulder when ruffled)
Create your ruffle by stitching straight down the center using the longest stitch setting.
Remember DO NOT backstitch!
Pull on thread to create your ruffle.
Use the neck of the shirt to determine the length.

Pin your ruffle onto the shirt neckline:

Using a normal stitch setting, stitch the ruffle onto shirt:

And while you are at your machine, stitch around the pumpkin and the stem too!
Gently remove the thread that was used to create the ruffle on the neckline of the shirt and…..
You are done!
Now your little girl has a super cute Ruffled Pumpkin shirt!

Put that cute shirt on a super cute little girl and show off your creation!

Happy Halloween!

Summer Shirts!

Here are some more Summer Shirts!
Wanna see?!
Love the dinosaur – and the green stripes!

And this polka dot plane just may be my favorite shirt EVER!

Gotta love Summer Shirts!

Just an idea: next time you go to a little boy’s birthday make them a super cute Summer Shirt (and if it’s winter, then just buy a shirt with sleeves!)

Ruffled Bottom Monogrammed Onesie!

I decided to make the Birthday Girl a Ruffled Bottom Monogrammed Onesie!
The back!
I loved it sooo much that I HAD to make one for Harper!

I am about to make one for her to wear everyday this summer!

Love! Thanks Silhouette for cutting out the circle and the initials!

And the ruffled bottom just may be my favorite thing about this onesie!

And just because I can’t get enough of that cute ruffled bottom:

The perfect birthday gift for a perfect little girl!
What?!?
You want one too?!
Well guess what will be added to The Shop soon, very very soon!
Yep, that’s Right!
Get ready because these cuties are going up for SALE so your little princess can wear one too!

Birthday Onesie!

A few weeks ago, I had the honor of making a first birthday onesie and bloomers for one of the cutest little girls ever to wear at her first birthday party!
Her super talented mama made her tutu!
Here is a close up of the outfit:
One thing  have learned from appliqueing many onesies for Harper is that the neckline HAS to have a ruffle if the onesie will be worn by a little princess! See what a difference it makes?!

Of course I had to make this cutie a gift for her first birthday!
…I’ll share that tomorrow!

Tote Bag.

My aunt gave me these super cute Tote Bags! They are fun colors but plain and I can’t have anything that’s plain. So, I did this to it:
I made a ruffle pinned it around the top of the tote…

Stitched it on with two lines of stitches to make sure it stayes in place and doesn’t flop over.

Then my Silhouette cut out the “n” and I appliqued it right on the front of the tote.

Seriously I think this took about 15 minutes total! So simple and quick!
Now I have a cute tote to hold all of our sunscreen this summer!

A Story of the Summer Shirts!

Once Upon A Time,
I found these shirts at Walmart for $3.50 a piece!
They were cute, but needed a little something to make them fabulous, so I decided to applique them:
The crab turned out to be my favorite.
The shark is pretty cute too, though!

And I love the whale!
After 5 minutes of deliberation, the boy decided that the shark is his favorite one.
The End!
