Applique with your Silhouette!

Many of you have asked how I applique using my Silhouette. This is how it's done!

I begin with Heat n Bond and fabric that is cut 9 inches wide and ___ inches long (depending on how big you applique is).

Follow the directions on the package and iron the adhesive onto the fabric.

Then I put the fabric with the paper from the heat n bond still attached onto the carrier sheet and make sure to press is down really well.

Put the PINKIE/RED cap on the blade.

...then load your "media."

Create the design you want for your applique. I was doing an "n" this day.

Click on the Silhouette button at the top of the screen and then select "Custom Media" in the settings. Set the thickness to 33 (as thick as it will go) and I like the speed to be about 5. I also check "Double Cut" just to make sure every little thread gets cut (less work for me!)

Once you have your settings ready click send to Silhouette.

Then click "Cut Page!" (And say a little prayer...)

For some reason I get really anxious when the Silhouette is cutting out an applique... But most of the time if works like a charm! See?! My "n" just peels right off! Super easy!

Then I peel the paper off the the back...

And follow the directions on the package of Heat n Bond to iron on my "n!"

See?!

Then I head over to my sewing machine and stitch around the whole applique.

Ta-Da!

It doesn't get much easier than that!

  1. Great! Does it work if u take the paper off first or are u best cutting with paper always attached?

  3. Thanks! I keep the paper attached until the applique is completely cut! It works great for me!

  4. Wish I had a silhouette! I have a cricut from about 3 years ago. It couldn't handle the fabric. I haven't tried it with the heat and bond though. Maybe that is the answer...

  5. Thanks for this great tutorial! I'm asking for a silhouette for Christmas, and I was hoping there were ways to get around buying all their stuff! If I know I can do applique with it, this has me sold.
